She was born in Frink, Florida, to Mick and Annie Gainer. “There have never been two stronger people than Mick and Annie Gainer,” wrote Annie Laura in The Biography of Annie Carrie and Henry Mecca Gainer that chronicles her amazingly resilient lineage.
Their youngest daughter, Annie Laura, was born on June 18, 1924. Her siblings were Brooks, Earl, Alice Duane, James Samuel Henry, Annie Lois, and Riley Maxwell Gainer; all preceded her in death.
When just 16, Annie Laura was romanced by a handsome preacher, older by six years. She eloped with Olif Barfield in 1940. During the next 8 years she gave birth to Sylvia Jane, Charles Olif, Gainer Eugene, and Minnie Ann Barfield while serving as wife of the pastor of small Southern Baptist churches in Florida, Georgia, and Louisiana.
Midge became an Avon District Manager covering 5 parishes in southern Louisiana and extending into south Mississippi. She spent 32 ½ years inspiring and organizing, training and motivating as many as 200 ladies working under her at one time.
In addition to her parents and siblings, she was preceded in death by her husband, Olif Barfield and her firstborn, Sylvia Skinner. She is survived by three children – Charles O. Barfield and his wife, Lynda, of Hattiesburg, MS; Gainer Eugene Barfield and his wife, Susie, of Lafayette, LA; and Ann Corbitt and her husband, Barry, of The Woodlands, TX.
She is also survived by 11 grandchildren: Ronda Stuart (Matt), Ron Skinner (Kim), Tonya Skinner, Craig Barfield (Rose), Laura Cole (Tom), Leanna Lott (James), Stacey Ancelet (Steven), Kimberly Swanson (Reid), Candice Anaya, Chad Corbitt (Lark), Britney Carroll (Jeremy); 25 great-grandchildren: Van Stuart (Raeann), Waddie Skinner, Beau Skinner, Caleb Barfield, Graham Ancelet, Nate Swanson, Jon Swanson, Ryan Swanson, Timothy Corbitt, Joshua Corbitt, Braden Jordan, Cade Carroll, Hudson Carroll, Phin Anaya, Emily Faith Stuart, Jordan Guilliard, Courtney Swanson, Alexandra Barfield, Annsley Lott, Ashlynn Lott, Avery Grace Lott, Gracie Skinner, MariJane Skinner, Ava Emmalee Cole, and Abby Cameron Cole; and one great-great-granddaughter, Nova Jordan.
By request of their MawMaw, her grandsons and grandsons-in-law will be pallbearers. They include the following: Ron, Matt, Craig, James, Tom, Steven, Reid, Chad, Jeremy and Van. By the request of their Midge, the following nephews and great nephews will be honorary pallbearers: Jim Gainer and his son Sam, Gil Gainer, Max Gainer, Jr. and his son Riley, George Gainer and his son Marshall, Grant Gainer and his son Sam.
Visitation was Friday, January 26, 2018, at Willow Point Baptist Church, from 1 p.m. until the service at 3 p.m. Burial was in Damascus Baptist Church Cemetery in Graceville, Fla. at 1 p.m. on Saturday, January 27, 2018.
