The University of Southern Mississippi has been ranked among the nation’s best values for music majors by online resource guide Great Value Colleges. USM is the only Mississippi college or university to earn a spot among the top 60 schools listed.

Great Value Colleges developed the ranking by starting with a list of 100 schools, colleges and universities regarded as having high quality music programs. The list was ultimately narrowed down to the 60 most affordable colleges, which were ranked through a points system.

“I’m delighted that Great Value Colleges has discovered what we at Southern Miss have long known: that our School of Music offers its students a comprehensive, challenging educational experience that prepares them for successful performance and teaching careers,” said Dr. Maureen Ryan, dean of the USM College of Arts & Letters. “The faculty of the School of Music are, individually and collectively, both dedicated professors and world-class performers.”

Music majors at USM can earn a degree through the following programs: the Bachelor of Arts in music, Bachelor of Music in jazz studies, BM in history and BM in performance, as well as a Bachelor of Music Education with either an instrumental or choral concentration.

The School of Music boasts a strong placement record for graduates into competitive jobs and graduate programs, including professional performance work with the Rascher Saxophone Quartet and the English National Opera. Southern Miss is one of a select group of schools with accreditation for all four areas of the arts.
