Live life like someone left the gate open. That’s exactly what 4-H boys and girls have been doing. They have worked hard and had a blast. This past year has been truly outstanding with 201 cowboys and cowgirls riding in our 2016-17 youth horse show series. An average of 97 riders were at each show. Twenty-eight of these wonderful contestants were awarded Participation Awards, 27 Little Britches Buckles went to lovable little rodeo boys and girls of the ages 7 and under, 21 Event Buckles were presented to hard working competitors, and 6 saddles were earned by phenomenal All Around cowboys and cowgirls. A special thanks goes out to generous award sponsors at Water Flow Productions, Boot Country, and J&M Saddlery. There were over 273 attendees at the 2017 T-N-B Show Series Awards Banquet on August 19th. The Officers send a huge “THANKS” to everyone who helped setup, decorate and provided food for the magnificent feast. Much appreciation goes to The Lil' Butcher Shoppe for cooking the delicious smoked chicken. The clean-up crew had things sparkling clean in record time.

Lamar County 4-H is a family and all are proud to be members of this fabulous club. This was evident as everyone supported each other during 2017 Southeast District, Mississippi State Championships and the Southern Regional 4-H Horse Shows. The enthusiastic 4-H’ers cheered on and encouraged each other every day, all day. Many ribbons, plaques, buckles, trophies, and titles were won. The SE District 4-H Horse Show was held at the Harrison County Fairgrounds. An amazing 33 members entered the contests. Eleven of the junior members competed in the educational competition. Several projects were entered in the Horse Art and Photography categories too. The team won the 2017 Southeast District High Point County Team plaque. Thirty-one members qualified for the Mississippi State 4-H Championships. State was held at the Jackson Fairgrounds where 27 riders gave excellent performances. Five fabulous seniors and all eleven junior educational competitors represented Lamar County well. The Lamar County state team again earned points and were the 2nd high-point county in the state. Art and photography projects made a great showing as well. Several talented boys and girls qualified for the Southern Regional 4-H Horse Show. It was held at Perry, GA, August 2-6th. Two riders and one educational competitor made the trip as members of the Mississippi Team. Both riders made the “short go.” One marvelous rider finished 6th in pole bending for the region and the other super cowgirl finished in the top 15 in both barrel racing and the stakes race. The brilliant educational representative earned a 4th and 6th finish in the public speaking and demonstration competitions.

The 2017-2018 Turners -n- Burners Youth Show Series kicked off August 26. There was a huge crowd cheering on cowboys and cowgirls at the Lamar County Multipurpose Center in Purvis.
