Mrs. Lagatha Kay’s S.C.O.P.E. Class at Taylorsville Elementary is going green by protecting their environment and learning how ecology affects the cycles of plant and animal life, as well as recycling ordinary pull tabs into unique jewelry. The class held a ribbon cutting for their goldfish pond Tuesday morning for their classmates and invited guests. The pond is located near the front of the S.C.O.P.E. Building in a central location that provides a restful time for taking a break or eating lunch. The work was done by the sixth grade boys and includes the pond with 19 fish, a mushroom fountain, fencing, flowers, and even a stalk of cotton. The boys maintain the pond daily. Attending the ribbon cutting, top photo, were S.C.O.P.E. students, Superintendent of Education, Jimmy Dell Hancock, Taylorsville Principals, Jeff Duval and Karen Bryant, and Mrs. Kay. The S.C.O.P.E. third grade students are also busy weaving bracelets, bottom photo, from pull tabs to recycle and to raise funds to sponsor a child for corrective surgery for a cleft lip and palate. Mrs. Kay’s third graders found information in a magazine that told of the organization, Smile Train. After investigating the organization, they decided to try to raise enough funds to sponsor one child’s surgery, $250. The New York Times states “...one of the most productive charities-dollar for deed- in the world.” The bracelets can be made to order and sell for $5 each. Students have made bracelets in school colors and special sizes for individuals. Please contact Mrs. L. Kay at 601-785-2283 or any S.C.O.P.E. student to order a bracelet. Remember, the funds go for a very worthwhile cause and helps recycle products into something new and awesome. From left are Tori Tucker, Chandler Cline, Abby Starbuck, Hannah Starbuck, and Superintendent of Education Jimmy Dell Hancock, who purchased one of the bracelets.
